21 MAY 2009 - RECORDING...

I have started recording guitars for songs for my full length CD. Most of you will know that Zoltan completed the drum parts in early January. Zoltan recorded 9 of my songs and supplied me with 11 channels of audio. The vast majority of songs were all done in one take and sound exceptionally good.

David Carr has since prepped all the drum tracks and created a stereo bounce for Evan and I to use for our recording sessions. Since I have begun my parts I thought I would make a few notes on my progress and what gear I am using this time around. I started tracking last Saturday and here is a bit of a break down...

Gear

I am using my Soundworks Custom and Ibanez Prestige 7 string for all electric guitar parts on this CD. I used the Steinberger almost exclusively on the EP so wanted to use my passive pickup guitars this time around.

The Bogner Uberschall head will be used on all tracks through my Soldano 4x12 cabinet (V30 speakers) and a single SM57 microphone via my JLM TG Mic Preamp.

I am also using a REDEYE Reamp and DI box to capture dry signal and a Broadcast Audio Pro Hard On splitter so I can have both guitars connected permanently and switch between them with ease.

Evan is using a few instruments - as usual. Stingray 5 string bass with graphite neck. Chapman Stick (10 string). NS Stick (8 string). Dean 12 string bass. They all sound fantastic and add character to the songs for which they have been chosen

Day by Day...

SAT 16 - Not in Kansas Anymore - Riffs. Had a good day with it and incorporated 6 and 7 string parts to this song which was recorded on the CD EP last year. I wanted to make some changes and am really happy with how the 6 and 7 string guitars blend.

SUN 17 - Not in Kansas Anymore - Riffs. Having played around with it yesterday I went back and tightened things up. Quad tracking is working great and all is done except the leads.

MON 18 - Tsunamian - Riffs all done. Sounding huge. I changed a few parts having lived with this song a while I wanted to give it a different feel in the second "verse". Tone is getting better every day.

TUE 19 - Angel 17 - Riffs mostly done. Some of this track was pretty hard to nail but I got it in the end. Tested a few lead sound but didnt settle on anything yet.

WED 20 - Angel 17 - Riffs all finished. Started on Duality.

THU 21 - Duality - Riffs near complete. Zoltans incredible drumming on this track has taken this song to a completely new level... Well, that is true of all the songs - but especially this one. I recorded takes of all Tsunamian lead parts and have found a tone I am happy with.

FRI 22 - Disaster struck today. I was all set to complete Tsunamian but my Soundworks Custom volume pot completely died and I could not proceed. Fortunately Paul at Soundworks was able to take the guitar with no notice and replace the offending part with a 500k pot (usually it is a 250k pot). Basically it means the volume rolloff is a bit more sensitive. I quite like it actually and will keep it this way. The difficulty with this guitar is that it has very non standard wiring and I can not just take it to anyone to repair. I was very lucky Paul was able to assist at short notice meaning I didnt lose the entire weekend as well as today

SAT 23 - Tsunamian - finished the leads to a point I am happy with them. I may still go back and change things but it is sounding pretty damn good right now. The Soundworks gutiar is recording beautifully again with the new volume pot installed yesterday. Evan also just sent me a stick run through of In Transit - sounding awesome. I hope to collect his final version in the next couple of days. The Chapman and NS Stick bass instruments are really going to create a different feel on the final CD soundscape.

SAT 24 - Angel 17 - Started work on the leads and made some progress but not as much as I wanted. The phrasing in some of this one is pretty screwed up and it takes a few tries to get right. But it is starting to sound good. Tomorrow will be productive!

19 FEB 2009 - INTERVIEW REMINDER

Steve Turner Interview at "I Heart Guitar"

You may have missed this interview at Peter Hodgson's simply awesome I HEART GUITAR website.

It was my first chance to really talk about the CD EP after completion and I had a bit to say, as it turns out.

Peter was kind enough to also promote the release of the Not In Kansas Anymore CD EP as digital download.

If you are a fan of guitar and do NOT know about Peter's blog you really need to take a look.

IHG is very well written, always up to date and is a great way to keep up with gear and artist releases.

12 JAN 2009 - ZOLTAN CSROSZ COMPLETES DRUMS FOR NEW ALBUM

Last December I announced that Zoltan was recording drums for my first full album release. The drum recordings have been completed and they sound fantastic!

Many of you will know Zoltan from the Flower Kings as well as Richard Andersson's Space Oddyssey. Zoltan has also played with Jonas Hellborg and many other great bands and musicians.

Zoltan began work in the first week of December and had the full nine songs completed for me in the first week of January.

I have the audio files in my studio. I will be working with David Carr from Rangemaster to prepare all the files then Evan will begin recording bass and stick parts.

I am pretty excited about how this is going to turn out and can not wait for you all to hear the great work Zoltan has done for this project.

09 JAN 2009 - NEW WEBSITE

I had to tear down the old site and put up this simpler version because a lot has been happening and some elements of the previous site made it hard for me to update independently.

I thank Rob Burchett for his great work on the previous site and this change is more of a reflection of my lack of HTML skills than anything else. Rob also plays drums in a band called Gretchen Lewis.

I also thank Rob for the parts of this site that persist from his version including the header logo and basic feel.

Keep checking back because I hope to update a lot more frequently than in the past.

Aaron from Moko Creative will be completing the next incarnation of this site but for now, this will do.
